Get big hair with Bumpits!

Not really sure how I forgot to post these here but here are 2 reviews on the Bumpits. I'm sure by now you've seen or at least heard the infomercial on Bumpits, they even have ads in some magazines. Well last year they sponsored my very first subscriber contest and also sent me a set to try myself. These little hair gadgets are awesome! If you know me at all you know I love big hair, I naturally have big hair but I also love what I refer to as my Elvira look.

Unfortunately this look takes at least an hour of not more to achieve and that's with getting it done by a professional. We're talking tons of back combing, hairspray, bobby pins and hair pins or and lets not forget it needs to be blow dried and flat ironed first, that alone takes over an hour but I digress. I love my pouf so when I heard about Bumpits I was stoked! I'll admit I was also a bit skeptical but that soon faded. Now I have yet to try the Bumpits with straight hair simply because its not something I do often but I'm sure they would work perfectly. They come in 3 sizes, regular, tiny and Hollywood. Personally I think the Hollywood is a bit high for work but for a night out its perfect for that extra height. And you really don't need to back comb at all unless you have thinner hair but even then its minimal. Since I have a mane of hair I can actually get away with using a Bumpit on wet hair without backcombing or hairspray which is awesome. I'll admit the infomercial does seem a bit cheesy but these things really do work. Here are 2 examples of me showing you how they work on my hair and how to use them.

Click on the image below to see a "quick and dirty" demo of how the Bumpits work, the height they give you and what they do.

Click on the image below to see how I use the Bumpits with a headband for a cute summery look, or just something better than a boring headband ;).

I really do love these Bumpits especially since I am hair challenged when it comes to trying to style my hair. They are so easy to use and even the regular size changes up a look just enough to feel a little more done up than usual.

Price: It really depends on where you get them but it ranges from $9.99-$19.99 plus S&H if applicable
Rating: 4.5 out of 5. The only reason they don't get a 5 out of 5 is because I have a hard time getting them out of my hair, they go in super easy but there is a bit of tangling when it comes to the removal.
Where to buy: http://www.bighappyhair.com/ and I've heard rumors that you can find them at Walgreen's

Review: Hair: Curl Gel-Les'c

A few months ago I had the opportunity to try Curl Gel-les'c. I was very excited since I am always looking for ways to "tame the mane." As mentioned in some of my YT videos I have extremely thick, coarse wavy/curly hair. I refer to it as "ethnic hair." Ethnic meaning not Caucasian, not Asian and not African American but other ethnic. Its hard to explain but if you yourself are of Hispanic or Mediterranean descent or know someone who is then you might know the kind of hair I mean. If you are someone who prefers to categorize by hair types then I am like a 2c/3a.

According to my sisters, who are both hair dressers, as well as my old hair dresser I have the same amount of hair as 3-4 people with "normal" or "average" type hair if that makes any sense. If I were to part my hair to make 2 pig tails or braids, each side has the same amount of hair as approximately 1.5-2 people. Why am I telling you this? Well for one, I don't think people truly understand why I have to put so much product in my hair just to get it to look decent and to also to give you an idea as to why a lot of products that work for most people do not work in my hair. Oh and on top of being thick its also what I like to refer to as wiry and it's fairly long (past my bra strap).

Now onto my review. Let me preface this by saying that after looking at the Curls website I really think that this product is simply meant for a different type of hair.

According to the instructions that I received I was to try this on clean hair and in place of my usual cocktail of products. I'll admit I was hesitant because I know how my hair gets if it isn't loaded down with "Skittles" and gel etc. But after a few months of using it in place of the Skittles and Aquage Serum I decided to use it alone as directed.

I applied the serum to wet hair and I combed it through as usual and then "set" my hair as usual. Did my makeup and went to work. Everything looked fine when I left the house but as the hours wet by and my hair continued to dry things took a turn for the worse. My hair got poufy which isn't unusual, but it was also kinda flyaway and very frizzy. It did however feel very soft and natural which was nice but unfortunately the frizz factor outweighed the soft hair.

For those of you who watch me on YT or know me in real life you know my obsession with Friends, and if you are a Friends fan then you know this episode where Monica's hair got all crazy on vacation. Now my hair wasn't as bad as hers but it was pretty close. My usual curls/ringlets were barely existent and my hair felt as though nothing was in it, which if you have tame curls can be a good thing but in my case it meant major flyaway hair that had a mind of its own all day. I did like the light feeling that my hair had but unfortunately it also meant that it was untame. I felt like I had cotton candy hair. I was really bummed but I had a feeling that 1 product alone was not enough for my crazy hair. As mentioned in my video, the Curl Gel-Les'c does work wonderfully in place of my mousse and serum and in conjunction with my leave-ins and gel.

All in all I do like the product but for me it is not something that can be used alone. It needs to be part of a "hair cocktail." I will say that considering it has a lot of natural ingredients and oils it did NOT irritate my scalp at all which does happen with other products that have natural oils so that was a plus, it also has a nice, light, clean, light citrusy smell which I like.

This is my hair using the Curl Gel-les'c in conjunction with the Pravana spray leave-in, Bumble & Bumble leave-in and Joico Gel.

From the site:
"Curl Gel-les'c (pronounced Curl Jealousy)
It isn’t a gel, and not quite a serum it’s Curl Gel-les’c (pronounced Curl Jealousy). This botanically based, organic curl styler imparts brilliant sheen, banishes frizz, and holds those twirls in place! Great for humid climates. Transform dry frizzy locks into the enviable curls that every woman dreams of, with Curl Gel-les’c. Go ahead, your curls deserve it!

Application: Day #1 - Apply Curl Gel-les'c to freshly cleansed/conditioned hair, while it is still wet. Gently work through curls from root to end. Allow to air dry.

Day #2 - Refresh with Quenched Curls Moisturizer, apply Curl Gel-les'c only as needed.

I think this may be why I had a problem, I rinse my hair daily, I just can't have stale hair and I didn't have the Curls Moisturizer to add to the mix.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Polyquaternium-11, Sorbitol, Certified Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Polyquaternium-37, Vegetable Glycerin, Certified Organic Coconut Milk ( Cocos Nucifera Fruit Juice), Certified Organic Linden Seed Oil ( Tilia Cordata Flower Extract), Certified Organic Flaxseed Oil ( Linum Usitatissimum Seed Oil, Certified Organic Chamoile Extract (Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract) Certified Organic Rosemary Extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract), Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol."

Rating: 3 out of 5
Price: $25 for 8oz so it is on the pricey side but you don't need a ton of it
Would I recommend it: Yes because I do think it is a good product it just didn't work for me on its own. If it is used in conjunction with other products it works well and if you have a different texture hair it might work even better for you.

Health: Check in time!

So the weekly checkins have now become biweekly and I hear no complaints. Come on people we're supposed to bug encourage each other to exercise.

So the usual...
What have you done since the last checkin?
What are your goals for the week?
Victories?
Fails?

Me:
I went grocery shopping and have really tried to eat healthy all week. Even cooked dinner everyday so far. I also took 2 long walks at lunch. I also did the elliptical twice last week, not for very long but I got on and sweated a bit none the less.

My goals are to continue to eat healthy and try and get my ass on that elliptical more!

Victories - I haven't bought lunch all week and I have had at least 3 F&V every day so far. Oh and I relaunched my old weightloss blog so if you are interested DM or PM me and I'll send you the link. I'm posting there daily even if its just my daily menu. It keeps me accountable.

Fails? I miscalculated my meals yesterday and ate enough for 2 days, oh well moving on, no need to linger in past calories.

Go any tips or tricks you want to share? Last week PinupCandy mentioned MapMyWalk which is an awesome site to, well, map your walks and its free.

For anyone reading this, the challenge is open to anyone not just those that I list as participating, just reply in the comments section.

Beauty related wise I have TONS or reviews to post so stay tuned.

Review: The Brush Guard

A couple months ago while doing a thorough deep cleaning on all my brushes and decided that it was the perfect opportunity to try out my new Brush Guards. I had seen a few videos on the Brush Guards and they looked great, but as with everything else I like to do my own trial and error before I show or recommend a product myself. I only have 1 assorted pack of Brush Guards and I have like 25 brushes so I used the assorted pack on the brushes that needed it the most, specifically my 239 and 217.

In addition to trying the Brush Guards I also decided to do a mini comparison/experiment using a DIY "wrap" that I saw on a video by Jennac0re. She used tissue but I decided to try it with some paper towel. Basically I cut thin strips of a paper towel and wrapped the bristles of my other troublesome brushes that didn't get a Brush Guard.

All in all the paper towel did do a nice job of helping reshape the brushes, but the brushes that got the Brush Guards did far better overall and in the long run continued to retain their shape. My 217 lost its shape after its first washing after I purchased it and as you can imagine I was pretty disappointed. After washing and letting it dry with a Brush Guard it looked better than new AND it continued to retain its shape long after. Another thing I like about the Brush Guards is that you can use them to store your brushes as well so your brushes will always retain their shape while in the guard.

If you can't afford to spend the extra money at this time then definitely try the DIY method but I HIGHLY recommend getting at least 1 assorted pack of Brush Guards as soon as you have the extra money, especially for your problem brushes if not a few packs so that you can use them on every brush.

Rating: 5 out of 5
Price: $5.50 including tax and shipping for US orders per pack, that is a great deal!
Where to find: www.thebrushguard.com
Would I recommend? Most definitely!

Click on the image below to see my video review where you can see how the Brush Guard works as well as more info on them.
(music in the video is unknown, it is from an old practice/performance CD, sorry!)

Looking for Product Reviewers?

I'm posting this here because occasionally I receive inquiries via Twitter and YouTube from companies asking if I would be interested in reviewing their products and since I'm not sure who watches me on YT versus reading my blog I thought it might be helpful to post this here as well.

If your company is looking for someone to review products please send me a message, I am more than happy to try out new products and provide my honest opinion. I don't promise to love everything that comes my way simply because it is gratis. I do promise to give my honest opinion on why I either love it, hate it, like it and why I recommend a product or not. I do post all reviews here on my blog as well as on My YoutTube Channel and they all have the word "Review" either as a tag or in the title so they are easily searchable.

Any and all reviews posted on my blog and YouTube Channel are in no way influenced by anyone or any company, they are strictly MY personal opinions based on trying the products myself. I do not expect everyone or anyone to agree with me. I am simply sharing information and conclusions that I have come to based on trying an individual product and I hope that somehow it helps someone else. If you watch my YT channel you know that I do not love everything I try regardless of how I acquired it.

If you are a company specializing in beauty, health or exercise related items and would like me to try and review your products then feel free to contact me. The only items that I will not try are diet suppressants of any kind otherwise I'm pretty open to an and all products.

Health: Super late and LONG overdue check in

What can I say, I'm a slacker but I didn't get any reminders from you people so I'm guessing that I'm not alone ;p.

So it's been over two weeks since the last check in. Have you been exercising? Eating well? Did you accomplish your healthy lifestyle goals?

In the past 2 weeks I have been a slacker in the exercise department, although that changed this week. So far I've gotten on the elliptical and walked twice and I have been trying to eat better but realized that I really need to go grocery shopping more often because eating out is NOT healthy and especially not if we do it often so this weekend I am stocking up on some healthy foods and snacks and I plan to do some cooking too so that we can not only have healthy dinners but lunches too. Not sure if I've ever shared my recipe blog with you yet but I started this in 2007 when I was doing Weight Watchers and I still make lots of these recipes now and I plan to continue to add more when I come up with or try new ones. The blog is Eat, Snack and be Healthy. My goal is to not only eat healthy but enjoy what we're eating and I never deprive myself, everything in moderation, so I am always trying to find new ways to eat what is usually considered "bad foods" by finding a healthy twist to them, including desserts.

In addition to my food blog would a list of healthy snacks be helpful? Let me know and I will do a separate post on what I like to snack on and then you can add yours in the comments. With a 3 day weekend coming up I'm sure there are lots of BBQs/Cook Outs on the horizon so what are you going to do? Fall off the wagon and indulge or still enjoy yourself while eating healthy?

What have you done in the past 2 weeks? What are your goals or plans for this next week? How are you staying motivated?

Participating: Me
PinUpCandy
Kuuipo1207
jackieg02
jenniewowza
amberwillo (she's PG so we'll cut her some slack even though I think she is kicking all our butts)
natneagle

My goal for the rest of this is to get on the elliptical at least one more time, do 5 push ups, 10 planks and 1 Bar Method DVD session. And of course continue to measure and eat healthy.

Please check in below with how you did and anything else you want to add, and be sure to let me know if you are blogging about this too so I can check out the post. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Kick off your shoes with GoldieStarling!

Today in the "Kick Off Your Shoes with..." interview series we get to know the amazingly talented GoldieStarling! I originally found GoldieStarling on YT via HollywoodNoirMakeup a couple months ago. GoldieStarling was hosting a Tim Burton inspired contest and I was just awe of her her talent in that video and after watching a few more I was hooked! Her looks are what you might consider more theatrical or artistic but some are definitely wearable and they are all beautiful. She is truly an artist! Plus not only is she super talented but she's so real and down to earth. No matter what looks she's doing you will definitely learn something from watching her.

(click on the pictures to see the videos/tutorials for that look)

ICM: At what age did you discover make-up? When did you start wearing makeup and what did you wear at first?
GS: I'm not exactly sure when I first discovered make-up. I grew up in a fairly conservative environment and my mother didn't really wear it often. I think I was more fascinated with nail polish as a child. I vividly remember painting things with it and getting in trouble for it. I started wearing make-up my first year of college. My roommate taught me how to put on foundation and I was pretty much hooked from then on. I only wore very basic stuff like powder and mascara. Most of the time I would just put random shadows together which I'm sure now, in retrospect, looked awful.

ICM: What made you really get into make-up (wearing and/or collecting)?
GS: When I first started going to concerts I began to experiment with my make-up. I'm a huge music fan and I would draw inspiration from videos and live shows. So I was always wearing black eyeliner and dark shadows. I guess it was my attempt at being a pseudo-rock star. And it was kind of a way to rebel for me because I grew up in a small town in the south, land of big haired débutantes and sweet tea.

ICM: What role did or does the YT beauty community play into your love of make-up?
GS:
Youtube has been such a joy for me. So many of the people I've met have inspired and taught me so much. I also feel like it's such an amazing place to find reviews on products. There is nothing more disappointing than buying a product and being underwhelmed, especially the more expensive brands. But it can also cause a major hit to the wallet. I can't even begin to count all the products I have bought because of Youtube reviews. But with the good comes the bad, and it's all about self-control.

ICM: Did you start out with drugstore makeup first? If yes what was the first brand(s) you remember using?
GS: I definitely started with drugstore make-up. I really think it's a great place to start, especially when you consider how expensive the higher brands are. I still use drugstore make-up and I find a lot of times you can get similar results. The first products I used were Maybelline's Great Lash and a Revlon powder foundation.

ICM: Who’s your favorite Drag Queen?
GS: I think Jackie Beat is amazing! I want to be her best friend. I also really like Divine as well. Her work with John Waters is brilliant.

ICM: What was the first brand of high end makeup you ever remember using?
GS: I think it was Clinique, specifically one of those little eyeshadow duos. I remember thinking it was really chalky and streaky.

ICM: What are your staple items, the ones you can’t live without and have replaced at least once if not more?
GS:
In no particular order: Revlon Colorstay Foundation in Ivory, NYX JUMBO EYE PENCILin Milk, Covergirl Lash Blast Lashblast Very Black, NYX Blush in Taupe, MAC Fix+, Burt's Bees Lip Balm, NYX Lipstick in Thalia

ICM: Bret Michaels or Dee Snider and why?
GS: David Bowie, oh wait he is not an option. Well okay then Brett Michaels. I think his voice is hot and he knows how to rock some fierce hair extensions.

ICM: Any makeup or skincare tips or tricks that you’d like to share?
GS: I think taking vitamins everyday, especially vitamin E, is a great way to keep your skin healthy from the inside out. Also drink A LOT of water. It just helps flush your system and keep your skin moisturized. I'm also a fan of the honey and aspirin mask for exfoliation. It leaves my skin baby soft.

ICM: What would you say to someone who is just getting into makeup to help him or her get started on the right foot?
GS:
I would say to practice. If you really want to improve take five minutes a day and practice techniques. To go even further at the end of the day devote some time to doing one eye. Play with colors and see what you can create. The possibilities are endless.

ICM: What do you do for a living and how does makeup play a role in that if any?
GS:
I am a college student majoring in Computer Animation and Graphic Design. I am also a “part-time” artist. I mainly do commissioned paintings and drawings. I think make-up plays a huge role in that aspect because I am such a visual person. I respond to certain aesthetics and I think it translates into my make-up.

ICM: If you had to label your makeup style what would you call it?
GS: Crafty Couture? I'm kidding. I think “Crazy Face Paint Lady,” or CFPL, is a moniker that I'm particularly attached to at the moment.

ICM: Where do you get your inspiration for looks?
GS: Most of the time I sit down and pick out colors. What happens from that point I'm not really sure. It becomes a game I suppose. I like to challenge myself and let the creativity flow.

ICM: Was or is there a specific genre of music that influenced your makeup style?
GS: Music translates into EVERYTHING, even make-up. My favorite genre is rock and it kind of influences me to do darker looks. And with that said it has made it hard for me to do natural “beauty” type makeup. But I'm practicing and learning to use a lighter hand because I'm interested in all types of make-up, not just the dramatic.

ICM: What is your favorite “go to” look if you have little time but don’t want to run out the door with a naked face?
GS:
I will usually try to perfect my foundation first, then apply mascara, fill in my brows and add a lip gloss.

ICM: Why did you start making videos on YT and/or start a blog?
GS: I really have no idea. If you told me that I would be making videos on Youtube a year ago I would have laughed. But since watching all my favorite gurus and actually purchasing products that I love, I think I just can't help myself. It's like a compulsion and another medium for art.

ICM: Looking back, what are some things you wish someone would have told you before you jumped into the makeup addiction?
GS: I wish I would have known about eyeshadow primers. I know that sounds ridiculous but they have really improved my results. I only learned of them last December through Youtube. I think it would have saved me from all the years of needless eyeshadow creasing and frustration.

ICM: What is your favorite color?

GS: Royal Blue

ICM: What is your favorite type of food or your favorite dish?
GS: I love STRAWBERRIES! They are just the most amazing food in my opinion.

ICM: What other hobbies do you have?
GS: I am a super crafty person. I think that comes from being an artist. But I constantly have to be doing things with my hands which leads to all sorts of hobbies from jewelry making to crocheting even stop motion animation. My hobbies are just all over the place and random because I have so many things that interest me.

ICM: What is your favorite 80s movie?
GS:
This is a hard question. I grew up in the 80's so I have a lot. My all-time favorite is Labyrinth. Jim Henson was such a genius. I really wish he was still around for the kids today. But I love love love Dirty Dancing too. Patrick Swayze in those black pants..... I think that's all I need to say.

ICM: What is the best brand or type of make up that will last through the “walk of shame”?
GS:
For the love of clean sheets, WATERPROOF mascara and eyeliner!

ICM: What is your favorite on line store(s) for beauty products or deals?
GS:
I like Shop Craze, Sephora, Ulta and MAC.

ICM: Who is your favorite comedian?
GS: Mitch Hedberg because ducks eat for free at Subway. He was the king of punchlines. I really wish he was still around too.

ICM: Anything else you’d like to share with the readers?
GS:
Don't sweat the small stuff! I know it sounds cliché but I really believe in it. If you are constantly worrying about little things then you're missing out on life. I like to just go with the flow and see where it leads me.

Review: Urban Decay Primer Potion & Sin

This is MY personal opinion on the new UDPP wand and the new Sin Primer. I have been wearing UDPP since last July and absolutely love it and can't live without it. Its definitely one of my HG products and I seriously wonder how I ever lived without it and what took so long for them to create this product? My only complaint that I have ever had with the UDPP is the same as everyone else, the bottle and applicator. Its a known fact that those adorable genie bottles are hording precious product in those cute little curves. You know it and I know it, its a simple fact.

Now I guess enough people started to complain and write into Urban Decay as well as on YouTube and their blogs that Urban Decay decided to come out with a new applicator, a bent wand:
I recently did a major UD haul during their most recent Friends & Family sale and in addition to the many items I purchased I also stocked up on UDPP and I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to try the new Primer, Sin. This was right around the time that they released the new applicator so my Sin Primer came with the new bent wand. I'll admit I was excited but hesitant. After opening and using Sin a few times my gut was right, I don't love the new want. Its a step in the right direction but still not there IMO. I actually had a subscriber comment with a great suggestion, keep the super cute genie bottle but make the plastic softer so that it is squishable. GENIUS! It's the perfect combination of style and practicality. They can keep their super cute signature packaging and it allows us to get out every last drop of that precious primer. Its the best of both really! Don't ya think Urban Decay?
Pros of the new wand;
It does get into the top part/curve of the bottle.
Its a good concept.
Its a step in the right direction.
Cons;
It's awkward to get in and out of the bottle.
I feel like it might break off if I'm not careful or even over time with regular use.
Its awkward to apply, I can't just put it on my lid, I have to watch the angle otherwise I might stab my eye or get too much product on my lid.
It still doesn't get to the bottom of the bottle.
Now onto the Sin itself, it is a beautiful color but its not my favorite and not something that I will not be repurchasing. It looks great on its own but I don't think it does anything to alter or enhance the color of any other shadow that I have applied on top of it except for similar type colors if that makes sense. Colors like Honey or Half Baked. Now don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful highlight and perfect alone for those days when you have no time but still want a little something to brighten your face. If it was a base it would be awesome but as a primer its nothing like its big sister, the original UDPP, which by the way I now have enough to last me YEARS.

So there you have it, my 2 cents (more like 50) on the new wand and Sin. Be sure to check out my video below to see a swatch as well as an alternative to cutting open your UDPP bottle.
Click on the picture below to watch the video.

Both primers can be purchased at Sephora/sephora.com or www.urbandecay.com
Let me know if you have any questions.

I'm not a huge lipgloss fan but I have a few and they are mainly MAC. I kinda like the cookie smell that they have.

See Thru Lip Colour:
Never used

Dazzleglass:
It is on my shopping list

Cremesheen Glass:
Never used

Lip Gelee:
Never used

Lip Pencil:
My staple lip pencils are MAC. I love the colors but unfortunately I am allergic to some of the colors so I only have about 5-8 liners but I've been using the same colors for years.

Solar Bits:
Never used

Nail Lacquer:
Its all I used in the 90s. Great colors and I've never had any issues with them, I'm just not a fan of the limited colors they have now.

Shadestick:
I have a few and love the colors but they aren't creamy enough for me and I hate that they drag on my eyelid.

Paint:
I was using the paints long before the paint pots ever came out and really do prefer the paints than the pots. I still have a few since they last forever.

Paint Pots:
Soft Ochre is my favorite. I like that they have such a variety of colors but wish they would have stayed with the paints.

Eyeshadow:
Its all I used for many years and only recently started branching out into more brands like UD, Stilla etc.

Pigment:
I LOVE their pigments but only buy the LE sets because I prefer to get a variety for my money.

Glitter:
I love glitter period and I do have some MAC glitters which are great!

Eye Kohl:
I have 1 and like it but I'm not a huge eye pencil fan.

Chromaline:
Its on my shopping list

Liquid Last Liner:
I love the colors and the fact that they are waterproof. The formula is kinda funky and goopy though and I hate that I have to use oil to remove the remnants after washing my face.

Lustre Drops:
Never used

False Lashes:
I love MAC lashes and have 1 pair. They are just too overpriced IMO

ProLash Mascara:
I hated the mascara formulas in the beginning and never bothered to try any of the new ones. I've heard they have improved over the years but I'm not willing to dish out the money.

Zoomlash:

Plush Lash Mascara:

Fibre Rich Lash Mascara:

Dazzle Lash Mascara:

What has been your favourite MAC collection to date?
Cult of Cherry but I honestly never paid attention to the collections until 2008, I just bought what I liked regardless

Which MAC collection in your opinion do you think was disappointing, if any?
Everything since Cult of Cherry. Too many collections being released one after the other and a lot of hype over nothing.

What products do you think MAC are missing?
More cream liners in different colors and a waterproof sealer like Kryolan's Cel Sealer.

Let me know if you decide to do this too, I'd love to see what your favorite products are!

NOTM - June - Flash Back - Mac's Alumina

For those of you who are regular readers of my blog and or regular viewers of my videos you know that I talk about my husband a lot. I am very fortunate that he is so supportive in general but especially when it comes to my obsession with beauty, cosmetics and "maintenance." Since he is an artist he sees colors differently that I do which is why I always ask for his help in matching colors for eye looks and why he usually names most of my looks for me. In addition to asking him for color options (I've mentioned before that I'm afraid of color and my usual range is very limited), I also ask for his input when its time to get my nails done. I don't do this because I can't decide for myself but since he loves my nails as much as I do and I am trying to broaden my color spectrum I usually ask him what color I should get on my nails. Sometimes I'll bring him a few colors to pick from and other times I just say, "I'm getting my nails done tonight, what color should I get?" and he says whatever color he thinks will look good or that he would like to see on me. You see, as mentioned before, I pretty much only wear black (with the occasional, white, red or purple), my husband on the other hand LOVES color and is constantly trying to get me to buy something other than another black outfit. Since I don't anticipate that happening anytime soon I like to think of the bright colors that I wear on my eyes and nails as my "splash of color."

In addition to being an artist he's also a gear head which means that when he looks at nail polish he really sees car paint. Sounds odd but it actually makes sense. So that adds to him helping me pick out colors. Since I have only recently started branching out into brighter nail colors my selecting is still pretty limited so last week when I asked what color I should get he said "Silver!" Mind you I had just been wearing Fuggen Ugly for the past month and to me that fell into the silver family but according to hubby it was more grey. So I dug through my small collection and found a "vintage" MAC polish that was silver. Now when I say vintage I mean from the 90s. Have I mentioned that I have a hard time getting rid of stuff? Of course I had no idea if this polish was even ressurectable but I tool it to my nail tek just in case and surprisingly it was fine. It hadn't turned, separated nor did it need any thinner. It did have a slightly stronger than usual odor but nothing unbearable.
Prior to my nail appointment I went to Walgreens to see if Sinful had anything in the silver family but no such luck. Fortunately even after almost 10 years my MAC polish was wearable. Sadly I think I only have about 1 application left so if anyone reading this has seen a similar silver in any brand please let me know.
I'm not sure if MAC is still using the same formula for their polishes these days, but if they are then rest assured that they are well worth the money!

I almost forgot the Challenge Check in post!

So it's been a week. Did you exercise? Did you eat well? Did you accomplish your healthy lifestyle goals?
I can say that although I never got on the elliptical even though the husband unearthed it for me like I asked. Next week for sure! I did however walk. I walked 3 times and I worked in the garage with hubby so I definitely did my 2 hours for the week.
The 3 walks were during lunch for roughly 30-45 minutes each and on Saturday hubby and I went to his garage to rearrange thing so that my car could have a home until we can work on it. I'm going to guess that I did roughly 30 minutes of moving cars and parts since it was just the 2 of us but I didn't do as much as hubby. (pictures to come later).
Eating wise I did fairly well, I still have the usual struggle of loving carbs and not eating enough fruit and veggies (F&V), I am however keeping up on the protein but I need to cut back on the sodium. But the clothes are fitting more like normal so I'm going to guess that the number on the scale will be where it needs to be on Monday.

So what did you do?
What are your goals or plans for this next week?
How are you staying motivated?

Participating:
Me
PinUpCandy
Kuuipo1207
jackieg02
jenniewowza
amberwillo (she's PG so we'll cut her some slack)

My goal for this next week is to get on the elliptical at least once, to do 5 push ups (I suck at them and realized when trying to push the motor around that I have no upper body strength), 10 planks and 1 Bar Method DVD session. And of course continue to measure and eat healthy.

Please check in below with how you did and anything else you want to add, and be sure to let me know if you are blogging about this too so I can check out the post.

Have a great weekend!

NOTM - ManGlaze Matte Nail Polish -Fuggen Ugly

Last month I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to try ManGlaze Matte Nail Polish. I received both colors, The Death Tar (matte black) and Fuggen Ugly (matte silver/gray). I wore The Death Tar polish for about 2 weeks and it's awesome! I tried it first without a top coat and it was SUPER matte then after about 5 days I added a top coat. Loved it. Then on my next trip to the nail salon for a fill, aka maintenance, I decided to try Fuggen Ugly. I have received so many compliments on this color it's shocking. I mean, I knew it was awesome but I never expected the reaction that I've gotten over a greyish/silver nail polish. It's subtle yet different and not too funky for my conservative work environment. Not that it would make a difference but those are where a lot of the compliments are coming from.

I noticed that Fuggen Ugly goes on smoother than The Death Tar and it isn't nearly as flat Matte as The Death Tar is. Don't get me wrong it's still very matte but when I see it I think more sueded finish than matte. And when you look at the matte versus top coat it's not as huge of a difference as there was with The Death Tar. As with The Death Tar I like both the matte and with a top coat, the only problem with the matte version is that you will be prone to more nicks and scratches but if that doesn't bother you then leave the top coat at home!

L: Fresh from the salon, as you can see its a subtle difference. R: Sorry for the blurry pic but you can see the matte a little better next to the top coated nails.

Top coat on all nails. This is after about 2.5 weeks with it on.

Fuggen Ugly is a matte grayish/silver with a hint of pearl. Almost like Mac's Silver Thorn eye shadow (from the website). This is definitely a new favorite and will become a staple in my polish collection. If I can manage to get The Death Tar back from my sister that one will too :).

Click the image below to watch the video showing both The Death Tar and Fuggen Ugly.

This is it! The challenge has begun!

I realize that a Friday may not be the ideal day to start an exercise challenge but think of it this way, if you live in an area that has nice weather this weekend then you can go for a nice walk or hike, especially if you have a little furry one to keep you company.

It looks like there are six of us:
Me
PinUpCandy
Kuuipo1207
jackieg02
jenniewowza
amberwillo (she's PG so we'll cut her some slack)

So what are you going to do? Have you already set a goal and a plan? Did you do anything today? Remember next Friday is check in and I'm hoping we all have something positive to report!

Have a great weekend!

Exercise...what's that?

That pretty much sums things up for me lately. I love how receptive my body is to exercise but I also hate it. I love it because once I get into a routine I can eat whatever I want and not worry about anything. I hate it because the minute I stop I can eat as healthy as I want and slowly the pounds start to sneak up on me. I've never been a gym rat but I am a dancer and as long as I am dancing things are fine, the minute I stop its all shot to hell. See love/hate. Ever since I started my new job last Summer my activity level has changed and not for the better. At my old job I worked in a 17 story building and a few of us formed a "stair master" group where we climbed 15-17 stories twice a day. In addition to that I had a walking group and we would walk a little under 2 miles 3 times a week, and on top of that I had dance. Wow, no wonder I could eat anything I wanted.
At my current company I work on the first floor of a 2 story building and it's hard to find people to walk with although we have a great walking area. I have gone on a few solo walks but it's just not as fun. Unfortunately the economy has impacted my dance classes on both levels. I can't afford to go 3 times a week any more and neither can a lot of other people which means that there aren't as many classes because the instructors have no one to teach. So here I sit, eating healthy but suddenly my clothes are fitting a lot better than they used to (I prefer my clothes to be a just a tad loose).
Now that I type all this out I realize that I need to get off my arse when I get home and do something. I have an elliptical in our spare room along with lots of other equipment. YT and Twitter and IM can wait so there is no need to stay glued to my laptop right? No one is going to die if I don't respond right away and I highly doubt anyone is sitting there just waiting for me to load another random video. So what is my excuse?

Motivation!

I've mentioned my old weight loss blog in the past right? Well when I was a regular participant in that community I posted daily and I would hold exercise challenges which helped not only myself but others that needed the motivation. So what do you think. Anyone here interested? Anyone else need a virtual workout buddy? Nothing too hard core just a weekly check in maybe? I'll do a weekly post and you comment. Just something to each other accountable? You could even make a little post on your blog if you wanted or even tweet about it.

What do you think? Are you interested? Let me know in the comments section if you are and when I do my weekly post I will list the names of those participating. The challenge would be to exercise at least 3 times a week for 40 mins each day or 2 hours a week broken up however. I realize that isn't very much but we want to start with baby steps otherwise its too easy to get discouraged. Plus if you do more then it feels like an even bigger success. It will start tomorrow June 5th till the end of the month. Are you in? Leave your comment below! :)

Prizes from Mythbuster Beauty Blog Contest

I love contests, especially when I win :)! So far this is the 3rd blog contest I've won since last fall and all I had to do was enter my name and email address, gotta love that and some luck! Thanks to Jen at Mythbyster Beauty for another great contest and amazing prizes. She recently had a contest giving away a some Urban Decay Get Baked goodies and I won! I'm always shocked when I win but sure enough the prizes arrived about a week after I received the email letting me know I won. So far I've only tried the bronzer but I'm sure I'll do some looks using the palette soon. Here are some pics of what I won and as always you can click here for the corresponding video if you prefer to watch instead of read.

Kick off your shoes with QueenB Makeup!

Today in the "Kick Off Your Shoes with..." interview series we get to know the beautifully talented QueenB from the Queen B Chronicles! I originally found QueenB last fall while perusing through different blogs and was I awe of her work. At the time I wasn't familiar with BlogTv so I just saw the stills that were posted on her blog and I will say that I was disappointed that she didn't make YT videos because I wanted to learn something from her. Fast forward to this year and add Twitter to the mix and I now get to chat with this beautiful woman daily! Not only is she super talented but she's hilariously funny and down to earth too.

ICM: At what age did you discover make-up? When did you start wearing makeup and what did you wear at first?
QB: Hmmm I think I always liked makeup. I remember enjoying the full faced outline of barbie girl faces in like "Barbie Coloring Books". Some would have these huge pictures of the Barbie cartoon mainly her face, and I would sit there drawing in different makeup to each one. lol I think around 6-7ish.

ICM: What made you really get into make-up (wearing and/or collecting)?
QB: I have always loved makeup but recently after becoming addicted to makeup tutorials (bout a year ago) I have been collecting a lot more. LoL I would say now I have more to use, such as primers, paint pots, stuff I wasn't really doing that much.

ICM: What role did or does the YT beauty community play into your love of make-up
QB: Psssh! lol Watching Youtube vids are soo addicting! I have like 98932984398 women/ men makeup tutorials I'm subbed to on youtube. I can't get tired of it.

ICM: Did you start out with drugstore makeup first? If yes what was the first brand(s) you remember using?
QB: My mom had us on Revlon when we were allowed to wear lipstick. Which was "Toast of New York" If I remember. LOL That was our first lipstick at 17. My mom was pretty strict on wearing make up. So after I was allowed I delved into MAC.

Who’s your favorite Drag Queen?
QB:
Nina Flowers from RuPaul's Drag Race... QUE LOCA! lol I loved her, she was fabulous, fresh, innovative, real & just a nice nice person. I really enjoyed watching her. She is sooo fierce! She didn't have to win.. to win if you know what I mean :)

What was the first brand of high end makeup you ever remember using?
QB: MAC.. then shortly after NARS. NARS is quite sexy :)

What are your staple items, the ones you can’t live without and have replaced at least once if not more?
QB: Staple items.. hmmm. 120 palette for sure, MAC Studio Fix face powder, NYX jumbo pencils, Zero liner from Urban Decay, NYC liquid liner, &  Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara. I love all of them and probably use those the most. I think if any girl has that, (which all are fairly cheap) they can start off with some great looks. The 120 by far has been my favorite purchase ever relating to makeup. It really has paid for itself.

ICM: Bret Michaels or Dee Snyder and why?
QB: lol Rock of LOVEEE baby!! haha I gotta go with BRET. Dee Snider has wayyy to many dead stuffed animals up in his mansion for my liking lol. I'm not animal rights activist, but my grandma & a lot of people believe dead animals in the house are bad luck. LOL creepy!! but you know grandma's :D

ICM: Any makeup or skincare tips or tricks that you’d like to share?
Q: I would like to recommend Origins Charcoal Mask, best mask ever to take off dullness, blackheads, to clean pores --->

ICM: What would you say to someone who is just getting into makeup to help him or her get started on the right foot?
Q: Wow this is hard, cause I'm still learning at makeup. I think everyone is always learning. Even the best of the best continue to learn and that's what makes us great. I suggest maybe practicing as much as possible, don't be afraid to try new things. Also don't be afraid to think outside the box or to show off looks on the street. 50% of pulling off a look is confidence :)

ICM: What do you do for a living and how does makeup play a role in that if any?
G: Right now, I own a graphic design company called "Dataroom 5" with my boyfriend, my cousin does all our html, css work. Tulio and I both have been designing for years. You can see some work here: http://www.myspace.com/dataroom5 As it ties in with makeup? hmmm I would say as a design aspect I do like my makeup like I do my designing. Flashy, fun, new, colorful, I try and play with as much color as possible. Life is to short to always be "natural" :)

ICM: If you had to label your makeup style what would you call it?
Q: "Culture" would be the name. I would like to involve all aspects of culture. Have names after different cultures, music & food related names :) Like Nacho Orange, Mamasita Red, Boom box Eyeshadow, SWV nails & Rainbow Bright Pigment lol :)

ICM: Where do you get your inspiration for looks?
Q: Man, I talk about her all the time. She's slowly coming back. But youtube's JUDE RIVERA aka www.girly-show.com. I'm sooo happy she's back from her break. I find her personality, non-egotistical, inspirational, inventive, creative, honest & smart reviewer. I just enjoy everything about her looks. I aspire to be just as inventive as her. She always always impresses me.

ICM: Was or is there a specific genre of music that influenced your makeup style?
Q: I'm such a old hip hop, funk, & r&b head. But I have a wide range of likes of music. I think if it sounds good I like it. I think it inspires me to be bold. To be able to try anything and not stay in the box. To try new things and maybe you might like it.

ICM: What is your favorite “go to” look if you have little time but don’t want to run out the door with a naked face?

Q: Best go to makeup lol well If I have like 20 minutes (I'm pretty fast with my makeup), as of lately is my Mac Hello Kitty Palettes in Too Dolly & Stylin' from Lucky Tom palette. I think MAC did their thing with the "Too Dolly" Palette. I love it!

ICM:Why did you start making live videos on BlogTv and what made you start a blog?

Q: Well I didn't have time to learn between work & how to edit (My boyfriend is now learning so he can edit for me). But I had a lot of requests from mainly posting my pictures of my "looks of the day" on Makeupgeek.com which is owned by Marlena who is Makeupgeek on Youtube. A lot of girls asked me to do vids, so I decided this would be the next best thing. I really like it, because I get a lot more interaction, & questions answered when I'm live. Plus I like giving options on what I should use for different looks. :D

ICM: Looking back, what are some things you wish someone would have told you before you jumped into the makeup addiction?
Q: hmm Always do your research first before buying. I like to out weigh reviews on things before I buy or sample the product. I find this helps me narrow down my purchases. I wish I wouldn't have listened to the hype about the MUFE HD powder lol.

ICM: What is your favorite color?
G: Blue & Green are in tie for first place lol. I loveeeeee Blues & Greens..

ICM: What is your favorite type of food or your favorite dish?
G: Mexican food is my favorite. My favorite would be from La Milpa resturant in Milpitas, CA. It is their "Tortilla Soup" mmm so delish! That and Enchiladas :D

ICM: What other hobbies do you have?
G: I like to draw & play playstation with my boyfriend. LoL I'm a girl gamer. I still have my old nintendo, now we just got a sega master system lol.

ICM: What is your favorite 80s movie?
G: Favorite 80's film.. is either, 16 Candles, Grease was late 78.. um. hmm Goonies by far probably.

ICM: What is the best brand or type of make up that will last through the “walk of  shame”?
G: hahah the only makeup that's lasts with me during "play time" lol with my honey, is usually a smokey eye lol, that way if I'm sweaty my undereye is already smokey lol.

ICM: What is your favorite online store(s) for beauty products or deals?
G: I love that it's 100% real products for cheap---> allcosmeticswholesale.com, ulta.com & cherry culture.com all great websites.

ICM: Who is your favorite comedian?
G: Favorite comedian? wow. I have a lot. Katt Willams is funny as hell, Kathy Griffin, Adam Sandler, Will Farrell.. pssh so many!! I can go on forever. I have a obsession with comedy.

ICM: Anything else you’d like to share with the readers?
G: If you follow me on twitter please don't be scared to say hello. I will respond back! I know a lot of youtube gurus tend to only talk tot a certain choosen few, I've exprienced it also. But please know with me, I enjoy hearing from you! I like to share myself with all of you, and learning things about you<3

Confessions of a YouTube Makeup Guru:Featuring Yours Truly!

You may remember back in February I mentioned a great new Webzine, Glimmer Gloss Glow (GGG). Well not only has Kerri featured some of my tutorials from the beginning but she also asked to interview me about a month after she launched GGG. I was so honored and blown away by that it took me 2 months to actually get my act together and submit my answers. Its rather embarrassing really, but I realized that I'm so used to being the one asking the questions that it was a little strange to be on the other end, especially since I'm typically such a private person. Sure I share things with you here and on my YT Channel but I don't really share a lot of personal information, so this definitely helped me appreciate those who I have interviewed even more than before. :)

It truly was an honor to be interviewed by Kerri and GGG and I can't thank her enough for the opportunity. If you are interested in learning a bit more about me then please be sure to stop by GGG and check out "Confessions of a YouTube Makeup Guru: gypsydancermacaholic."

And of course don't forget to check out the GGG YT Channel and follow her on Twitter

ManGlaze Matte Nail Polish -The Death Tar

A couple weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to try ManGlaze Matte Nail Polish. I received both colors, The Death Tar (matte black) and Fuggen Ugly (matte gray). I've been wearing The Death Tar polish for about a week and it's awesome! I first started with just 2 coats and no top coat to see how I liked the matte look and its pretty cool. Different than most black polishes and I really like the "rough" look. The only thing I found was that for me (this may not happen to others) I felt that without the top coat my polish was not "protected" and I got a few nicks when going about my day. Nothing obvious unless you really inspected my nails but just an observation. I still love the look though, this color in particular reminds me of flat black primer. It's very matte and a grayish black with a hint of sparkle. Almost like Mac's Knight Divine eye shadow (in the pan not applied). I also noticed that without a top coat the polish itself seems a bit porous and it soaks up the nail oil and lotion so over time, while it remains matte, it also gains a hint of shine if that makes sense (a video will be posted this weekend to show you how it looks and how it progressed over time).

About 30 minutes after applied. 2 coats, no polish

So far the matte has lasted all week but I wanted to see what it looked like with a top coat so last night I applied CND Super Shiney and while it definitely made a difference it didn't get super shiny like most polishes so that was cool because I was afraid that a top coat would significantly alter the matte finish.

Clearly by the name this polish is geared towards men but as with most cosmetics, it really is unisex. The packaging is very cool and the bottle is about the same size as most other polishes.

I get my nails done on Tuesday and plan to use Fuggen Ugly as my next color so stay tuned for that review next week.
