Kick off your shoes with GossMakeupArtist!

Today in the "Kick Off Your Shoes with..." interview series we get to know the very talented Wayne aka GossMakeUpArtist from YouTube! Wayne started doing makeup videos about 3 months ago and has just taken off with a bang from day one. I'm not really sure how exactly it was that I stumbled upon his channel but I'm so glad that I did! His tutorials are a wealth of information and he really breaks down the looks to make them easy enough for anyone to try!

ICM: At what age did you discover your love of makeup and that you wanted to learn more about it?
G: I can remember my mother getting me some pink and blue eyeshadow when I was a small child to "play with" on her. But it wasn't until I was 19 that I remembered my love of makeup and how it could transform a face.

ICM: What made you decide to get into make-up?
G: Having acne! I was obsessed with flawless skin! I wanted to have it, and if I couldn't have it, I wanted to know how to achieve it - through makeup.

ICM: What role did or does the YT beauty community play in your love of make-up?
G: Youtube is very interesting for me. Its a place where you can share you knowledge with others. Its all real with youtube. Today were bombarded with fake images of beauty. Unrealistic images that have been airbrushed and retouched that not even THEY LOOK LIKE THAT! What you see on youtube is real. Its not retouched in anyway. So if I can do something, with practice, you can too. Without the need for retouching.

ICM: When did you realize that you wanted to become a professional Make-Up Artist and how did you get started?
G: It was when i was 20. I decided to do as much makeup as I could on whomever would let me. From there I perfected my technique, learning as I go. I did not find books very helpful as nothing seemed to make much sense. Once I thought my makeup was up to scratch I started to call people (local magazines, etc...) to say I'd do the work for free as I just wanted experience.

ICM: Who's your favorite Drag Queen?
G: Ummmm, I don't think I have one. Though Pamann is very funny (but not a drag queen)!

ICM: Did you ever experiment/practice new looks on your friends or just yourself?
G: Everyone I could get my hands on. It was only with youtube that I first started to do the makeup on myself.

ICM: What was the first brand of high end makeup you ever remember using?
G: Bobbi Brown. I think...it was a long time ago!

ICM: What are your staple items, the ones you can't live without and have replaced at least once if not more?
G: Embark, Carbon, Beautymarked which are all MAC eye shadows. Foundation - Ben Nye Creme matte Foundation. I also love MAC brushes, but I have not yet had to replace them - I look after them very very well.

ICM: Brett Michaels or Dee Snyder and why?
G: I had to google these to know who they were! Brett Michaels - but only for looks sake, as I have never heard of them before!

ICM: Any makeup or skincare tips or tricks that you'd like to share?
G: Expensive does not mean better. We are lead to believe that if its a high end brand that that equals better. And thats not the case. Mostly its about packaging, labels and what they want us to believe, with retouched photos to boot. Thats not beauty to me. I want products that work, work well and don't cost the earth. Did you know the the second ingredient in Creme De Le Mar is Vaseline! Skincare tip. Use sunscreen everyday. Please. You'll never know how important it is until its too late.

ICM: What would you say to someone who is just getting into makeup to help him or her get started on the right foot?
G: Practice. Be nice. Nice will take you a long long way. So many people want fame. Do it for the love of makeup. Do it because you can't stop thinking about it. Be kind. And practice. And ever stop learning.

ICM: Is being a Make-Up Artist your full time job? If not what else do you do for a living and how does makeup play a role in that if any?
G: Yes it is. I work for a broadcasting house and freelance as a makeup artist in my spare time.

ICM: If you had to label your makeup style what would you call it?
G: Soft. I want it all to be about the skin and eyes. Natural, soft, beautiful makeup.

ICM: Where do you get your inspiration for looks?
G: In everyday life. From thinking nonstop about makeup. I love beauty in everyday life. So many people are so beautiful and they don't even know it. The shy, the timid - so beautiful. Its those people that make me look twice in the street, not the stereotypical beautiful men and woman.

ICM: Was or is there a specific genre of music that influenced your makeup style?
G: I'm not sure. Though for me, if you know about my youtube channel you'll know I love music. I like the softness and quietness of music. Heather Nova. Sarah Mclachlan. Lene Marlin. Tom McRae.

ICM: What is your favorite "go to" look to do on a model if you are given little to no direction?
G: 3 toned eyeshadow. It was i do most of the time. Highlight shade. Midtone shade. Contour shade. And gorgeous skin.

ICM: Why did you start making videos on YT?
G: Because everything I saw was too hard. So many tutorials with little instruction. I wanted to make sure I explained things well so that everyone, young and older could understand and pick things up.

ICM: Looking back, what are some things you wish someone would have told you before you jumped into makeup?
G: Honestly, I can't think of any. I'm sure I will later though! Just be nice. It matters. Sometimes more than talent.

ICM: What is your favorite color?
G: Black.

ICM: What is your favorite type of food or your favorite dish?
G: Cheese!

ICM: What other hobbies do you have?
G: Reading. Nutrition. Baths :)

ICM: What is your favorite 80s movie?
G: The Color Purple.

ICM: What is the best brand or type of make up that will last through the "walk of shame"?
G: Good question! Ben Nye - but you all want me to say MAC don't you!

ICM: What is your favorite online store(s) for beauty products or deals?
G: I tend to shop around to be honest, so i can't really give a specific answer.

ICM: Who is your favorite comedian?
G: Oh......Julie Davis (from Nighty Night) that makes me laugh so much, probably partly because we have the same accent. My humor is very dark, very ascorbic.

ICM: Anything else you'd like to share with the readers...
G: Subscribe to me! No, really. Just remember that beauty is not about role models or pictures we see that are retouched. Its in the faces of the people we love. The people that we can't live without. And use Sunscreen!

  2. I love Goss (I can't call him Wayne...we weren't introduced that way!). When he first came on the scene talking about concealers and foundation application I was HOOKED. He's full of information and generous about sharing it. He makes all his subscribers feel they have a personal relationship with him...he's just wildly accessible. Thanks for this!
