Kick off your shoes with HollywoodNoirMakeup!

(click on the pictures to see the videos/tutorials for that look)

Today in the "Kick Off Your Shoes with..." interview series we get to know the beautiful and talented HollywoodNoirMakeup! I originally found HollywoodNoirMakeup on YT after watching a video and her Brigitte Bardot Tutorial popped up. At the time she only had a few videos up but I instantly subscribed because I knew I was going to love her work and sure enough I do. She does glamorous yet wearable looks as well as some amazing theatrical looks. No matter what you're looking for definitely check her out because you will get inspired and learn a few tricks in the process.

ICM: At what age did you discover make-up? When did you start wearing makeup and what did you wear at first?
HNM: I remember always having an interest in makeup from a very young age. I can recall dressing up and relishing in the character that I created or wanted to emulate, trotting along in my mothers high heeled shoes and wearing her best lipstick (not always within the lines, mind you). I wasn't officially allowed to wear makeup until I started modeling at the age of 14 but the admiration for it was always there. The first thing I wore like every other young girl, was mascara and lip gloss. I quickly got into other products, such as eye shadows and even eyeliner within the next few years, especially because I was surrounded by the fashion business and was required to do my own makeup for certain events of that nature.

ICM: What made you really get into make-up (wearing and/or collecting)?
HNM: I would have to say it began with my love for art and self-expression. I was always one to try something new and being a visual person, I loved the versatility and subtle and or dramatic transformation makeup had to offer. I absolutely love period makeup, so I suppose my passion for history was also a front runner for my inspiration. I love the fantastical idea of pulling your muse from everyday life and integrating it into a piece of art on your body.

ICM: What role did or does the YT beauty community play into your love of make-up?
HNM:
The beauty community has helped me grow, in terms of technique and expanding my imagination. By watching all of my fellow make-up artists, it has definitely helped me to challenge my own abilities. I have learned so much since becoming apart of the YouTube community and it has definitely impressed upon me a sense of drive and ambition. To see the professionalism that others have reached, inspires me to push forward and become even better.

ICM: Did you start out with drugstore makeup first? If yes what was the first brand(s) you remember using?
HNM:
Yes, I did start out with drugstore makeup as most other aspiring makeup enthusiasts do. I remember my mom always using Revlon or L'oreal so that is what I began using before I got into various higher end brands.

ICM: Who’s your favorite Drag Queen?
HNM: I know he isn't considered a Drag Queen, but I loved the androgyny and outrageous fashions of David Bowie. He was known for gender bending and I have always been very inspired by his countless glamorous and questionable character-esque looks.
ICM: What was the first brand of high end makeup you ever remember using?
HNM: It would have to be MAC Cosmetics.

ICM: What are your staple items, the ones you can’t live without and have replaced at least once if not more?
HNM: Every vintage girl requires liquid liner. I cannot go out of the house without it. Especially since I love to wear my trademark cat eyeliner most of the time. I think it is classic and lends so much glamor to any makeup look, so that is definitely one thing I always have in my collection. Another item would have to be mascara. I have very fair eyelashes naturally and I find that I look washed out if I don't wear it. Another staple item is my eyebrow pencil, for that defined starlet brow that I adore so much. My eyebrows are quite fair and sparse, so there is no way that I would leave the house without it! Those are my three highest staple items, but the last thing I never leave home without is a punchy, red lipstick. The great thing about a dramatic lip is that you don't necessarily have to wear much makeup with it to make a bold statement.

ICM: Bret Michael's or Dee Snider and why?
HNM: Both! It's hair metal, baby.

ICM: Any makeup or skincare tips or tricks that you’d like to share?
HNM: It seems like common sense, but the best skincare advice I can give you is to always moisturize and cleanse your face before you go to bed! It doesn't matter how talented you are or what brand of makeup you wear, it starts with a clean canvas. It's like trying to paint a car that has a rough finish. It's not going to look polished and complete in the end!

ICM: What would you say to someone who is just getting into makeup to help him or her get started on the right foot?
HNM: My best advice would be to never limit or underestimate your own creative ability. If you don't try, you'll never succeed. The key is to practise and to keep an open mind. Don't allow others rules to define your approach to makeup. Think outside the box, experiment and have confidence in your vision. It's what sets a unique makeup "artist" apart from the crowd.

ICM: What do you do for a living and how does makeup play a role in that if any?
HNM:
I used to work at MAC as a makeup artist, but I was recently laid off so now I work as a freelance artist in my city for photo shoots, proms, weddings, etc.

ICM: If you had to label your makeup style what would you call it?
HNM:
Eclectic. I never stick to just one category of makeup. I think that would be quite boring. For my everyday style, probably classic vintage pin-up meets rocker chick. For my more creative looks, I tend to be inspired by a blend of theatrical, high fashion or historical fashions/styles.

ICM: Where do you get your inspiration for looks?
HNM: Everywhere! Theatre, Old Hollywood, art, rock and roll, fashion, mythology, fantasy, nature, comic books, movies, history, or even a mood or atmosphere etc.

ICM: Was or is there a specific genre of music that influenced your makeup style?
HNM:
Yes, I would have to say probably rock and roll, industrial, original goth/punk and new wave music. I like things with an edge, so anything inventive or gritty. The eighties was great for eccentric and experimental makeup.

ICM: What is your favorite “go to” look if you have little time but don’t want to run out the door with a naked face?
HNM: I hate when I am rushed and have no time to do a full makeup look, but if I absolutely have to, I would say: A flawless foundation look including bronzer, a warm peachy blush with a dewy highlight, mascara, peach or bronze lip gloss and filling my eyebrows in. It's not a look I prefer to wear, but it gives my fair skin a nice glow, with just a pop of color.

ICM: Why did you start making videos on YT and/or start a blog?
HNM
: I had watched so many other people put themselves out there and I saw how helpful and fun their tutorials were, so I thought it would be a great way to share what I had learned throughout my various experiences as a makeup artist. I get a lot of questions from friends and even strangers who want to know how I achieved certain looks, so originally, it was to take requests from my friends and post them online so they could access them whenever they wanted, even if I wasn't around to show them in person. Also, I thought it would be a great outlet and learning experience, as I take into consideration all comments and requests from my subscribers. I think in the end, it will make me a better, more well-rounded artist.

ICM: Looking back, what are some things you wish someone would have told you before you jumped into the makeup addiction?
HNM:
To not fall into the habit of buying something because it is advertised well on television. There has been so much money wasted that way. Especially if it is expensive, do your research and watch reviews on it first! Don't be afraid of what others think, follow your heart and your own personal style and just dive into what feels right for you. Make up is about creating a mood, or a feeling. It allows us to express whatever we want to the world and that can change from day to day, so work with that!

ICM: What is your favorite color?
HNM:
I know it isn't considered a color, but black and red. Also, any sort of rich gem colors such as deep greens, purples and midnight blues.

ICM: What is your favorite type of food or your favorite dish?
HNM:
Italian food. I'm in love with carbs, so any kind of pasta, pizza or fries. I also love a good, old fashioned, steak and baked potatoes kind of meal. I'm kind of picky when it comes to certain things like vegetables, but I like anything that is rich in taste and probably not good for me.

ICM: What other hobbies do you have?
HNM:
Well, my first passion and interest throughout my life has been writing! I just finished a creative writing course at a local college and am working on finishing my novel. I have always had a flair for the written word and I think it springs from my love of literature. I am an avid reader and could not live without my book collection! I could sit and read all day long. I also have a love for anything theatrical or artistic. I love photography, I'm a visual artist, I love collecting antiques (clothes, furniture otherwise) as well as watching movies and playing video games. Yes, I am a nerd in other words!

ICM: What is your favorite 80s movie?
HNM:
I have too many to name. My all time favorites have to be Blade Runner and Labyrinth. Who doesn't love a good, moody sci-fi flick and David Bowie in tights?

ICM: What is the best brand or type of make up that will last through the “walk of shame”?
HNM:
I would have to say MAC or Bitchslap Cosmetics! Both are long wearing.

ICM: What is your favorite online store(s) for beauty products or deals?
HNM: I don't buy much online, but if you haven't tried it, you must check out www.bitchslap-cosmetics.com the makeup is all highly pigmented and so affordable! I absolutely love it, especially when going for those bold and vibrant looks. Another affordable website that I love is www.coastalscents.com, you can acquire a variety of blush or eyeshadow palettes there, which is so convenient and not to mention inexpensive.

ICM: Who is your favorite comedian?
HNM:
Probably Dane Cook or George Carlin. Anyone that uses vile and obscene subject matter! I just love their frankness and ability to transfer any mundane story into a more physical kind of humor.

ICM: Anything else you’d like to share with the readers?
HNM:
Yes. Be yourself! What makes someone else a great make-up artist, may not work for you. We all have different styles, tastes and techniques. It doesn't make one better than the other, but the uniqueness of the individual is what sets them apart. Be bold, be confident and do it with passion. Also, remember these wise words as Sophia Loren once said them, "Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful."
